⌘M

Eric,
Please take a look at the attachment. In A, I drew the two upright rectangles, and line ab between them. B is what I want, with that line moved up, one inch. (I dragged it by eye in the example.)
You've taught me about OPT+drag select, to move points, but I can't do it for this line, without also grabbing the bottom corners of the rectangle.
So, I select the line, and use ⌘M to enter the dialogue box, where I have two choices: Move and Duplicate, and Duplicate and Move. I tried both, using y=-1, and number=1. Move and Duplicate gave me example C, Duplicates and Moves gave me example D.
Why not just a Move? Or, is it there, and I haven't found it?
Thanks!
